Fee and Features: cost to sell an item on eBay

So, how much does it cost to sell an item on eBay?

This is the most basic question on your mind as a seller. Let us help you understand the details.Although there is no start-up fee for selling on eBay, as an eBay seller you are granted access to a variety of benefits, such as marketing and advertising tools and seller protection. In order to access these, eBay charges you a fee that is based on your sales. Just so you know – in most  cases, you will only pay fees when the item sells.

eBay fees are structured so that you can choose listing formats to suit your needs. Review your listing strategy and consider which listing format options will lead you to success.

For every listing that you do on eBay, you are charged two types of mandatory fees

For every listing that you do on eBay, you are charged two types of mandatory fees

For item listings, eBay charges the Insertion Fees to sellers. Every month, you get Zero Insertion Fee Listings. The amount of the fees and number of Zero Insertion Fee Listings depends on which international eBay site you list your items and some other factors.

This fee is usually paid at the end of the transaction and is calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale. The total amount of the sale includes the item price, shipping service selected by the buyer, sales tax, any other applicable fees plus fixed fee of USD $0.30 per order.   Also, note an international fee and currency conversion charges may apply depending on your eBay registered  address.

When you list an item on eBay, you are charged a listing fee called the “Insertion Fee”.  This fee is charged for every listing that you put up on the site.

Every month you get a number of Zero Insertion Fee Listings. The number varies depending on which international eBay website you post your listings. For e.g. If you list on eBay.com, Insertion fees are free for your first 250 listings per calendar month (auction style or fixed price).

If you have subscribed for an eBay Store, depending on the store level you would receive additional zero insertion fee listings.

However, after you’ve used your zero insertion fee allowance, insertion fees are

  • Non-refundable if your item doesn’t sell
  • Charged only once per listing for listings with multiple items
  • Charged for the original listing and each time you choose to relist your item
  • Charged per listing and per category. So, if you list your item in two categories, you’ll pay an insertion fee for the second category too
  • Charged per listing if you create duplicate auction-style listings for identical items. Read more about our Duplicate listings policy

1b. Final Value Fees

Fee and Features: Final Value Fees - eBay

A Final Value Fee is charged only when your item sells on eBay. Final Value Fee can vary based on category, seller performance or having a store subscription Final Value Fee is usually paid at the end of the transaction and is calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale. The total amount of the sale includes the item price, shipping service selected by the buyer, sales tax, any other applicable fees plus fixed fee of USD $0.30 per order. Also, note an international fee and currency conversion charges may apply depending on your eBay registered  address.

The Insertion Fee is for making your listing visible on the eBay site whereas the Final Value Fee is the charge for a buyer agreeing to purchase the item, whether it is paid for or not.  So, if you have free listings, the Insertion Fee would not be charged but the Final Value Fee would still be applicable.

Remember – the Final Value Fee is charged regardless of whether the buyer has paid or not. It will show up in your invoice. If the buyer doesn’t pay, then you can proceed with an Unpaid Item Dispute to request a Final Value Fee credit.

Again, remember that the percentage of fees charged depend on the eBay site where you have listed your item.

The new regulatory operating fee

What you need to know

As a global ecommerce platform connecting millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets, we’re committed to offering a trusted global marketplace in a complex regulatory environment that affects eBay and our sellers.

To address the rising costs associated with the increasing number and complexity of regulations, including consumer and environmental protection, as well as new taxation and customs measures, we’re introducing a new regulatory operating fee.

From 8 April 2024, we’re introducing a new regulatory operating fee that will apply to all sales from listings on the following sites: UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland. The regulatory operating fee is calculated as a fixed percentage rate of the total amount of the sale (which includes the item price, postage, taxes and any other applicable fees).

blank

How the regulatory operating fee is calculated

This fee is calculated as a fixed percentage rate (0.35%) of the total amount of the sale (which includes the item price, postage, taxes and any other applicable fees), and is subject to Value Added Tax (VAT), where applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’re introducing this fee to address the rising costs associated with the increasing number and complexity of regulations impacting eBay’s marketplace – including consumer and environmental protection, as well as new taxation and customs measures.

The fee is calculated as a fixed percentage rate of the total amount of the sale (which includes the item price, postage, taxes and any other applicable fees), and is subject to VAT.

Total Sale Amount = £15 item price + £5 shipping = £20

Regulatory operating fee = 0.35% (fixed rate for UK)+ 0.07% (VAT)  = 0.42% of £20 total sales = £0.08

Total Sale Amount = £15 item price + £5 shipping = £20

Regulatory operating fee = 0.35% (fixed rate for UK) of £20 total sales = £0.07

The static percentage rate for the regulatory operating fee in each market is 0.35%.

The fee will be introduced from 8 April 2024 and is applicable to any item sold on or after this date, including sales for existing listings and renewals.

We’ll apply credits for regulatory operating fees on full refunds, partial refunds, and cancelled orders.

The fee will first appear on your May 2024 invoice.

Currently, there’s no cap on the regulatory operating fee.

No, the regulatory operating fee will not be charged in this case. The fee applies to all sales from listings on the following sites: UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland.

Other than these fees you may also incur the following (depending on whether you have chosen these features or subscribed to them)

Optional listing upgrades help your listings to stand out and attract buyers’ attention. Some of them, however, such as bold font or listings with subtitles are paid. The amount of this fee depends on the item’s price and the listing format and duration.

Depending on the store level subscription, these fees are charged on a monthly basis.  We’ll bill you for your eBay Store every month until you cancel your subscription.

To increase item visibility, try using Promoted Listings. A Promoted Listings fee is only charged when a buyer clicks on the promoted listing and purchases the promoted item within 30 days of that click.

Now, let’s go through these fees in detail

2a. Optional Listing Upgrade Fees

If you choose to enhance your listings by using any of the provided Optional Listing Upgrade features, you will be charged the fees accordingly. The fees for these optional listing upgrades vary depending on your item’s price and the listing format and duration.

2c. Promoted Listing Fees

Use the Promoted Listings features to get your item noticed and obtain greater exposure for your listings. The best part about Promoted Listings is that you’re only charged for the ad if it helped your item sell.

Promoted Listings fees

You choose how much you want to pay for your Promoted Listings—we call this the ad rate. Based on the listing’s quality, its relevancy to buyer search, its ad rate, and other factors, the Promoted Listings system determines which listings to show and where they are displayed.

Here’s how the fees work

The ad fee is based on the ad rate you chose.

Other than the above-mentioned fees, please make a note of the following fees as well which you would incur as a part for selling on eBay

blank

International fee

If your registered address is in the US, we charge an International fee if either:

  • The delivery address for the item (entered by the buyer during checkout) is outside the US, or
  • The buyer’s address is outside the US (regardless of the delivery address for the item)

This fee is calculated as 1.65% of the total amount of the sale and is automatically deducted from your sales.

If your registered address is not in the US, please refer to the fee page for your country or region of residence for your International fee information.

Dispute fee

If you are found responsible for a disputed amount as per eBay policies (e.g., chargeback), we charge a $20.00 dispute fee, excluding sales tax, for each dispute.

Seller currency conversion charge

When you create listings or sell items on an international eBay site, eBay may convert your funds to a different currency in order to collect amounts owed by you to eBay, or to payout funds due to you.

For example, if your registered address is in the US and you create a listing on eBay.de for which fees are due (such as insertion and/or optional listing upgrade fees), eBay will convert your funds from USD to EUR using the transaction exchange rate applicable at the time of listing, in order to collect these fees. When the item sells on eBay.de, eBay will calculate your payout amount by converting the sales proceeds from EUR to USD using the transaction exchange rate applicable at the time of the sale.

If eBay converts your funds, the conversion will be completed at the transaction exchange rate we set for the relevant currency exchange. eBay’s transaction exchange rate is composed of a base exchange rate plus a conversion charge. The conversion charge is a fixed percentage applied to the base exchange rate and retained by eBay. The base exchange rate reflects rates within the wholesale currency markets applicable to the currency pairing on the day of the conversion, or the prior business day. If exchange rates are set by law or regulation, the base exchange rate reflects the government reference rates.
